It's that time of year again. The new year resolutions roll in the and for some reason food and diet always manage to find their way to the top of the list. If you're like a lot of people you're looking for ways to make changes to the things that you eat. At least for long enough to counter the holiday food and dessert that we've been devouring since November.
We are happy to report that breakfast staples like pancakes can stay on the table with these 5 delicious but healthier topping options.
Topping one butter, just kidding. Well kind of butter is on the list but it's the like of nut butters not the traditional dairy based butters.
1). Almond butter -
A favorite around these parts almond butter not only makes a great topping for pancakes and waffles. It can also be used as a sub for butter and or added to the batter for an extra boost of protein. When using on top whip it up a bit for a lighter creamier addition.
2). Fresh fruit -
Fruit, cake and holidays in the same sentence. Oh the drag but we've added a kick to this option to spike things up just a bit (wink). Use seasonal fruit but mix with a splash of champagne and agave or honey. This makes a light and refreshingly fresh syrup perfect to top your morning meal without the guilt.
3). Granola -
Make your own or grab a pre-made mix. One thigs for sure is that you will not go wrong with granola. Sprinkle on top of a warm stack of pancakes, granola adds the perfect texture to each and every bite. And it's better for you.
4). Toasted coconut -
Toasted coconut is super easy to make. Set the oven at 350 degrees and place a handful of shredded coconut on a sheet. Cook until crispy and lightly browned remove, let cool and sprinkle as needed.
5). Yogurt -
A spoonful of yogurt goes a long way! Flavored or plain add this ready to go topping and enjoy breakfast.
Happy new year! Don't let diets and trends intimidate you this year. There are so many better for you foods that you can indulge in. As we like to say, you don't have to eat different to eat better.
